Identification

The modern view of the death of Jesus on the cross is that he died for my sins out of sympathy. However, the New Testament view is that He died on the cross not because of sympathy, but because of identification. What I mean is, Jesus lived a sinless life. But for those brief hours on the cross he took all my sins onto Himself. He was made to be sin - my sin. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Since I have sinned, I deserve to die. The only way around this is by someone offering to pay my penalty for me, to be my replacement. My sins are removed because of the death of Jesus and the explanation of this is obedience to His Father, who loves me that much.

I am acceptable to God not because I have obeyed or I have promised to give things up. I am acceptable to God because of the death of Christ and no other way. The wages of sin are death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ my Lord! That Jesus died for me so I can get off scot-free is not taught in the New Testament. What is taught in the New Testament is that he died for all and that by identification with His death I can be free from sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21 "For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ."
