The Seeker

I heard a story once about a seeker who wanted to learn the most important life lesson. He interviewed people from many walks of life and collected a great wealth of knowledge, but none had a convincing statement for what the most important life lesson is. Finally, the seeker heard about the wisest man in all the world who lived on a mountaintop in a distant land. So the seeker set out on his journey to find this wise man and learn the most important life lesson.

The seeker climbed the mountain, found the wise man and asked, “What is the most important lesson in life?” The wise man gave the seeker a pillow. Perplexed, the seeker asked the wise man, “What is this pillow for?” The wise man told him, “Open the pillow and scatter the feathers on the wind.” The seeker tore open the pillow, threw the feathers into the wind and watched them fly away in all directions until he could see them no more. Then the seeker turned to the wise man and asked, “What should I do now?” The wise man said, “Now go, gather all the feathers up again and place them back into the pillow.” The seeker, frustrated by now, said, “That’s impossible!” The wise man said, “So it is with your words. Once they have been uttered, it is impossible to gather them back up again.”

Proverbs 18:21 "The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences."
